Observation tower and pools in bomb craters in Tommelen nature reserve

Highlight • Viewpoint

A lookout tower with a clear view of the bomb craters in the Tommelen nature reserve.

The bomb craters, now water pools, were created in April 1944 after American and British bombings of the Hasselt train station.

Albert Canal Arch Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Albert Canal starts at the Port of Liège, with the Liège suburb of Herstal on the left bank and the island of Monsin on the right bank. Until Ternaaien, the Albert Canal runs parallel to the Maas. There it turns to the west to bypass Maastricht. As a result, the canal had to cut through the Plateau van Caestert (Caestert Crossing) and the Cannerberg. The Kempens Plateau also had to be crossed (Briegden-Berenbroek). Incidentally, this section is where the watershed between the river basins of Meuse and Scheldt (Eigenbilzen) is located. The canal remains on the west side of the Kempens Plateau, before descending 30 m to Hasselt. There it enters flat terrain and continues, in straight lines and with a slow descent, to the Scheldt.

Herkenrode Abbey Mill

Highlight • Monument

The abbey mill on the Herkenrode abbey site in Hasselt has been completely renovated. For 10 years, volunteers from Molenzorg Zuid-Limburg worked on making the mill ready to grind again. Among other things, the volunteers built new lock gates and a new water wheel. The millstone was also put back in order and new wooden teeth were made for a gear wheel. A long-term job, but now the abbey mill can grind again.

Herkenrode Abbey and Nature Reserve

Highlight • Historical Site

Cycling through the water: cycling about 200 meters in length through a pontoon, the edges of which are at the height of the water surface. Nice to do and to cycle to the Wijers.
Attention : cycling through the water is only possible in an interior design.

The 15-meter-high lookout tower in the Bolderdal pond area is partly in the water and offers a view over the hundreds of ponds.
From the 15 meter high tower you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the ponds. If you don't dare go up, you can enjoy the panorama through the periscope.

July 22, 2021,Fietstocht Linkhout (Door het hinterland van Hasselt).
Today we went on a bike ride in Limburg. We started at the church of Linkhout. Our planned starting point was inaccessible due to last week's flooding. Via Halen, Herk-de-Stad and Stevoort we cycled a bit through Hasselt. Then a stretch along the Albert Canal and the Herkenrode and Rode Ponds-Wijvenheide Nature Reserve. In Bolderberg we did a terrace. Back …
