Parish Church of Saint Ursmarus

The parish church is surrounded by a small, cobbled square with parking spaces on the north side and the public road on the south. This square is bordered on the northeast by the Scheldt River. Apparently, the church was built to serve the Scheldt ferry and the Scheldt canal. To the north, it bordered the Scheldt's unloading quay, to the west by the mouth of the Vliet (now filled in), which served as a river port, to the east by the ferry, and to the south by the Dendermonde-Mechelen road. There are a number of beautiful buildings on the Grote Markt of Dendermonde that certainly deserve your attention. Starting with the town hall, rebuilt in a Gothic style after a fierce fire. The town hall was originally a cloth hall from the 14th century. The heraldic flags on the facade give the building and the entire Grote Markt a festive character.
The Belfry, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was originally a corner tower of the Cloth Hall. During an extension during the 15th century, the belfry was given the function of town hall. The old carillon was also lost during the fire in 1914. Since 1975 a new one has been installed with 49 bells. You will hear a tune playing every fifteen minutes during the walk.
