Villa of Theodoor Vermylen with garden

Highlight • Historical Site

Former villa of Theodoor Vermylen, built as the director's residence of the Vermylen factories, was registered as a new building in 1912. Part of the separate factory district with housing built by the Vermylen company (see street note). The villa has a dominant character and a very authentic appearance. The rectangular volume rises on a substructure with a basement marked by the rubble stone plinth that also accentuates the central door porch. The protruding window risers help determine the verticalizing facade order. Typical of the construction period are the elements that give a castle allure, such as the tower-like roof crowning of the windows with a wide arched balcony and the fanning access stairs. The facade ornaments are mainly made of bluestone, supplemented with yellow brick in the rear facade and in front of the high chimneys. The sense of fine detail is also evident from the use of decorative ironwork and neat woodwork, and the use of colored glass in the decoratively traced skylights.

The district around this square was created on the initiative and with capital from Théodoor Vermylen, owner of an industrial empire that was the largest employer in Baasrode around 1900. Usines Vermylen started in the 1880s and quickly evolved into an impressive industrial complex. The company produced starch, dyes and starch. Later, the Vermylen family also started Colonia, a company that made metal boxes/tins for the food industry (biscuit boxes) and advertising panels.
As the company grew, the lack of new workers' houses became increasingly urgent. That is why Vermylen built this district himself.
In 1906, a row of 7 middle-class houses for employees was started, in 1908-1909, 17 workers' houses were built and in 1911, an ensemble of 8 middle-class houses was built, adjacent to the Ateliers de Construction. Each house has a facade stone with the house name, derived from the daughters of paterfamilias Petrus Vermylen. After this, Théodoor Vermylen had his own villa built, which was accompanied by the construction of a public square with a kiosk and another 6 houses. He lived in the middle of his employees. Around the beginning of 1911, no fewer than 50 'beautiful and healthy homes' had been built, which were made available free of charge to the working population. The name of the NV that managed the housing project: 'Schoone woonst baart geluk', speaks volumes. Various functions such as living, working and recreation were combined. Among other things, a small park, kiosk, school (1910) and theatre with a shop were opened under the name Concordia (1911).
A singing and theatre association (1908) was founded for leisure activities, as well as a brass band (1911).
There is currently no kiosk on the square. According to oral tradition, it was sold to the municipality of Moerzeke between the two World Wars. After dismantling, the pieces were taken to the other bank of the Scheldt by ferry and rebuilt on the village square directly opposite the entrance to the church.

Concert and event hall - Baasrode

Highlight • Historical Site

Initially a concert hall and banquet hall, founded by the Vermylen company, it was registered as a new building in 1908, part of the separate factory district with housing built by the Vermylen company. Located on the corner with the street called Hof ten Rode. According to the inscription on the memorial stone in the side wall on the square side, it was consecrated as a community chapel in 1954 and dedicated to Our Lady Immaculate, today without destination. The actual hall has an elongated rectangular shape under a tiled gable roof with a roof bell perhaps added later. This volume is preceded by a higher front building that provides access to the hall, typologically conceived as a corner house with a central door between wide lower windows. According to an oral source, this house would have functioned as a kind of parochial center or neighborhood meeting place and was later fully used as a home. The whole is characterized by facades in red brick construction with cutting joints contrasting with gray-colored elements of different materials: rubble stone in the base, bluestone moldings and sills and especially decoratively processed sintered brick. The regular facade division through checkered pilasters and the use of the same type of wall openings gives the construction some of the allure of a building with a public function.
