The Old Garage

Highlight • Structure

The Old Garage was the home of the Hammond family and brothers George and Richard ran a garage here for many years. There was a manually operated petrol pump in front and a large workshop to the rear of the property. Look at the pavement behind the lamppost to the left of the property and you will see the footings of the petrol pump. The brothers also ran a taxi service – and a betting shop.

Queens Lodge

Highlight • Monument

Queens Lodge is the oldest dated brick vernacular building in Hampshire – built c1648. The ornate brick pillars and entrance were inspired by Jacobean country houses. There is an Apotropaic or Witches mark inside the house. These are symbols scratched into the fabric of the building to keep witches out.

The lodge was previously a pub - The George Inn, & a grocery and bakery - Miller & Lee.

Note the Fire Insurance plaque above the front door. In the 18th century before municipal fire services were formed, fire insurance companies provided the only fire brigades. The plaque (bearing the emblem of the insurance company) was affixed to the house to prove to the fire brigade that it was insured.

Wickham Rail Bridge

Highlight • Trail

Wickham Station once stood on the site of the car park in Station Close. The Meon Valley Railway opened in 1903 and ran for 22 1/4 miles between Alton and Fareham, closely following the course of the River Meon. It was one of the last railways of any size to be built to main-line standards in the UK. The line took 5 years to build and was expensive to maintain, with long tunnels and chalk earthworks. Wickham was challenging for the navvies, with two river crossings and two road bridges to construct. There was little passenger traffic but it was a relatively busy station kept alive by freight. Its four goods sidings handled cattle and sheep from the weekly market and milk, and strawberry specials ran in the summer. The line was never profitable and the station closed to passengers in February 1955 and to goods services in April 1962.
