Casa Romana (Roman House of Kos)

Highlight • Historical Site

he Casa Romana is a reconstruction of a Roman villa. The building, which is inconspicuous from the outside, is located on the southern city bypass, the Leoforos Grigoriou.

In Roman times, the villa stood in a relatively central part of the town and belonged to a wealthy, aristocratic family on the island of Kos. The western thermal baths were quickly reached from here via the Decumanus Maximus, and the Agorá, the market square, was not far away to the north.

The ancient remains of the building were excavated by Italian archaeologists after the 1933 earthquake. The Casa Romana, which was inconspicuous from the outside, was then largely reconstructed on the basis of the finds.
During the Hellenistic period, three houses stood on the site of the Casa Romana, with inner courtyards typical of the time. Walls from this earlier construction can still be seen on the lower sections of the building's exterior. In the Roman period that followed, the three residential buildings were converted into a luxurious residence that now encompassed the entire block of flats. It had 37 rooms in an area of 2300 square meters and was the largest Roman villa in Greece.
Accessible on foot: From Elftherias Square (Defterdar Mosque) turn left past the market hall, then follow Vasileos Pavlou for 300 meters to Leoforos Grigoriou. The site is then on the right on the opposite side of the street.
Opening times: Wed - Mon from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., closed on Tuesdays. Admission costs 6 euros (as of June 2019).
