What to expect on Lily Lake – Lizard Lake loop from Alger Park & Ride
The journey begins with a gentle, smooth climb, but don't let that fool you; the path quickly steepens, becoming a technical test with rocky sections that might have you pushing your bike. You'll wind through an open forest, passing century-old stumps and mature second-growth trees, with glimpses of old logging railroad beds adding a historical touch. The placid backcountry Lily Lake and Lizard Lake offer serene spots for a break and a chance to spot wildlife like beavers, while the descent promises a thrilling mix of punchy, rocky sections and fast, rolling bumps. Keep an eye out for creek crossings, one of which lacks a bridge.
Planning your visit
Before you head out, remember that a Discover Pass is required for parking at the Upper Trailhead, also known as Alger Park & Ride. This is a multi-use trail network, so be prepared to share the path with hikers and equestrians, and always yield to them. Dogs are welcome to join you, but they must be kept on a leash. While the trail can get muddy, especially in wetter seasons, its good drainage often makes it a viable option even then.
