Tappeiner Promenade

Highlight • Trail

The Tappeinerweg was founded by the Vinschgau spa doctor, scientist and tourism pioneer Franz Tappeiner, who contributed a lot to Merano's good reputation as a spa town. The approximately four-kilometer-long walking path leads from the Gilfpromenade over the slopes of the Küchelberg to Gratsch. In addition to the native plants, there is also lush Mediterranean vegetation and even exotic plants.

If you're coming from the Tappeiner Weg trail from the Pulverturm tower to the Saxifrage restaurant in the old town of Merano, you can easily descend in a series of switchbacks. You'll exit at the Sissi restaurant near the chairlift to Tirolo village.
Beforehand, you can also descend via the herb garden and exit at the parish church. However, there are steep old stone steps.
Or you can also continue from the Saxifraga restaurant via the stairs and path.

Tappeiner Promenade

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Tappeinerweg, one of the many promenades in Merano, offers a wonderful view of the spa town and the Etsch Valley.

One of the most famous walking paths in Merano is without a doubt the Tappeinerweg, which leads from the city center along the slope of the Küchelberg. It is one of the most beautiful high-altitude promenades in Europe and offers a mix of alpine and Mediterranean vegetation combined with a wonderful panoramic view. Pines, Himalayan cedars, cork oaks, olive trees, eucalyptus, bamboo species and magnolias, agaves, aloes and prickly pears grow along the path.

The Tappeinerweg starts opposite the junction of the Gilfpromenade with the old Passeirerstraße. It runs for almost 4 km from the parish church to Gratsch. It has been described as the “gallery of the paradisiacal scenery of the Burggrafenamt” or as the “crown of Merano”. The city of Merano has the botanist, doctor and anthropologist Dr. Franz Tappeiner from Laas in Vinschgau to thank for this promenade, after whom the path is named. Since the path has hardly any inclines, it is also suitable for a stroll with a stroller.
