Thixendale Circular Walk

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

Easily accessible as you ascend north out of Thixendale along the Yorkshire Wolds Way, turn west to follow the Centenary Way, or east to follow this nice long section of the Yorkshire Wolds Way as it slowly curves north along Deep Dale before descending into Wharram Percy.

Wharram Percy — Deserted Medieval Village

Highlight • Settlement

Wharram Percy is the most famous, and one of the best preserved, deserted medieval villages in Britain. Positioned in a remote and picturesque valley in the Yorkshire Wolds, the village was continuously occupied for six centuries before it was abandoned soon after 1500. Historians are not sure why the residents left the village. Today, you can see the outlines of many lost houses above the crumbling remains of St Martin’s Church.

Wharram Quarry Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

With rich chalk grassland and thin Wolds soils, Wharram Quarry Nature Reserve provides important habitats for wildlife in Yorkshire. You'll see butterflies dancing between colorful wildflowers and buzzards nesting in the nearby woods. The area covers 7 ha and is open all year around. Make sure you stick to the paths so as not to disturb any animals.
