Church of Reconciliation

Highlight • Other

With the modern Church of Reconciliation, which the Brotherhood of Taize built here and fills with prayer day after day, the name really says it all. After the horror and misery of the Second World War, the founder of this community, Frere Roger, was primarily concerned with reconciliation: between peoples and between denominations ... and the way to get there is getting to know each other without prejudice and informal cooperation between people - especially of the young generation – who meet here in Taize. Which is often the beginning of a deep friendship.

The visit of the "Taizé Community" is described here by the tourist tips, because Taizé is certainly not an insider tip; Every week some 5,000 people visit this world-famous religious community. That is not the reason why we are having a hard time with this "tip". Should a visit to a religious institution really be recommended in a travel guide? It is therefore important to us that a trip here is not perceived as a tourist attraction. Taizé is a sacred place where people from all over the world come together to pray together, sing and experience solidarity and fellowship. Those who are receptive and want to visit the Order with the necessary respect are invited to join in. Young people from different countries and denominations come here for different lengths of time to learn more about spiritual and spiritual life in ecumenical services, workshops and small group discussions to learn social topics. They stay here partly for a week, some even for several months. For free meals and lodgings you work together with other young people, for example in the gardens or pottery workshops. In the conversations with the young people offered in the visitors, the enthusiasm for this community swiftly spread to a brother of Roger, later the Prior of the Community, who in 1940 bought a house in Taizé and lived there together with a few monks. During World War II, the community continued to grow. In the sixties, more and more young people took the opportunity to come here and live here for a while. The male religious community gained in popularity and became more and more of an attraction for young people even beyond France. In 1966, the first youth meeting took place with 1400 young people from over 30 countries. Meanwhile, about 100 brothers from 23 different countries belong to the Order.
