Pelde Mill, Esens

Highlight • Monument

It was 1986 when the city of Esens acquired this beautiful gallery Dutchman in a rather ruined condition and restored it. In the first year of the 18th century there was a post mill for the production of pearl barley, as the name "Peldemühle" already explains. But it only took 21 years before it burned down in 1722, after which a one-story Galleriehollander was built. Today's Peldemühle was built over a hundred years later, namely in 1850.
Since the restoration the Heimatverein Esens e.V. has been running the Peldemühle and its outbuildings as a museum under the name "Leben am Meer - a mill full of stories". The main focus of the museum is logically the settlement history of the Harlingerland, as well as that of the city of Esens

Carolinensiel Windmill

Highlight • Monument

The gallery Dutch on the outskirts is the only remaining of three facilities of this type in Carolinensiel. A twin mill was also located in Mühlenstrasse around 150 m into the village. A third mill stood on the inland low at the back of the museum harbor and served as a sawmill.
The windmill that exists today was built on the dike in 1742. The compass rose was not added until 1900. With it, the cap with the 11-meter-long wings constantly rotates optimally into the wind. Grain and oil fruits from the surrounding farms were ground in the mill. In 1960 the milling operation was stopped, and since 1974 the mill has been converted for holiday guests.
Even today, the sailors in the Wadden Sea aim for it as a landmark, the fighter pilots of the Bundeswehr use it as a "turnpoint". The windmill has been a landmark of Carolinensiel that can be seen from afar since it was built.

Carolinensiel Dike Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The dike church dates from 1776. It is the northernmost church in Harlingerland and the only one on the coast that stands on a dike.

A baroque pulpit dominates the interior of the simple hall building. The organ by Hinrich-Just Müller from Wittmund was installed with the gallery in 1782. The three ship models donated by the faithful as votive offerings are remarkable: to the left of the altar the brig VENUS from 1776, to the right the frigate ALJE MEHRINGS from 1921 and on the north side the three-masted barque MARIE EMILIE from 1985.

In 1793 the bell tower was built separately from the church. The tower is built low because of frequent storm winds and carries a swan on its top, the symbol of the Lutherans.
