This spot was once the location of a grand house, Weardale Manor, which was built by Philip Stanhope, 1st Baron Weardale, in 1906. The 145-room house fell into disrepair soon after his death and was derelict by 1939. The house was demolished at the start of WWII as Sir Winston Churchill feared it would be a navigational aid for bombers aiming to target his home of Chartwell. The spot is an ideal picnic location and affords spectacular views over the Weald.

Chartwell House

Highlight • Settlement

Chartwell House was the home of Sir Winston Churchill and his family from 1922 until shortly before his death in January 1965. The rooms remain much as they were when Churchill lived there and the gardens are still as he designed, giving you a great insight into the wartime Prime Minister's life. Entry to the house and gardens costs £17.25 for adults, £8.60 for children, and £43.10 for families. For more information, visit: nationaltrust.org.uk/chartwell.
