Fuchstanz: The Forest Inn

Highlight • Mountain Hut

With this highlight I mean the better of the two restaurants on the Fuchstanz: "Fuchstanz - das Waldgasthaus". There are, for example, very tasty tarte flambées, as well as decent salads. The price-performance ratio is okay for me. Payment is made in cash. The restaurant also runs a kiosk with a beer garden opposite the edge of the forest. There is, among other things, pea soup with sausages and it is THE biker meeting point in the Taunus. From the large crossroads directly at the Fuchstanz, paths lead to the Altkönig, Sandplacken, to the “big curve” and up to the Feldberg and down to Falkenstein and Königstein. A large overview map is located to the left of the kiosk.

Attention: Mondays and Tuesdays are closed!

Brunhildis Rock (Großer Feldberg)

Highlight • Natural Monument

The meeting point is on the summit plateau. A little away from the road, you can enjoy the wide view over the Hintertaunus from here. When the visibility is good, you can see as far as the Westerwald and the Vogelsberg.

Telecommunications Tower

Highlight • Monument

The most striking structure on the plateau of the Großer Feldberg is the 69.13 meter high television tower. The building was started in 1937 by the then Reichspost and completed in 1939. Since the transmission tower was used for war purposes, it fell victim to bombing raids on March 8, 1945. The reconstruction of the current building began in 1950. From 1953 onwards, Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk television was broadcast from here. Television and radio programs are still broadcast from here today - although the technology has changed several times. The tower is operated by the Telekom subsidiary T-Systems. The building has been a listed building since 1987.

Großer Feldberg Summit

Highlight • Summit

The Große Feldberg is not only the highest peak of the Taunus, but of the entire Rhenish Slate Mountains. The information about its exact height varies between 879 and 881 meters. The summit is extremely popular with day trippers from the Rhine-Main plain. Not only motorcyclists, racing cyclists and mountain bikers meet here on weekends, but also many motorists. It can get really crowded at peak times. Fortunately, the summit plateau is quite large. In addition to the television tower and transmission mast of the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation, there is a restaurant, two kiosks, a hiking home with an observation tower and a falconry. The most beautiful view is from the Brunhildis rock on the northern edge of the plateau. Various hiking trails lead over the summit. After all, the Taunus Club was founded up here and even Goethe liked to hike in the Taunus. There are plenty of trails for mountain bikers, including the official flow trail over the Fuchstanz to Hohemark. Racing cyclists particularly appreciate the twelve-kilometer ascent from Oberursel because of its length. The road from Schmitten is less busy, but also offers fewer vertical meters in one go. The Feldberg is by far not the most beautiful peak in the Taunus, but is definitely part of a tour in the Taunus because of its height and easy accessibility.

January 14, 2024,Happy Birthday Tour in den Schnee
For a good friend's birthday tour, we met at Sandplacken and hiked to the Fox Dance. After a short rest. We choose the direct route to the Großer Feldberg to celebrate our birthday with an excellent meal in the Feldberghaus. Around 4 p.m. we hiked straight ahead back to Sandplacken.
Thanks to the “birthday child” for the idea and implementation …

Beautiful circular tour on the big Feldberg.
Nice places to stop for refreshments along the tour.

Snow hike from Sandplacken to the Feldberg summit with a short rest. Then down to the fox dance between the numerous tobogganers and cyclists. There was a lot going on here today. After a delicious pea stew, we walked along beautifully snowy paths back to the car at Sandplacken.
There was an enormous wind on the Feldberg summit, almost hurricane-like …

From the Windeck car park we went to the "Fuchstanz" excursion point and then to the large Feldberg. A mix of sun and snow showers accompanied us.

Fast lap, around and up the Feldberg, in really bad weather.

Today we were surprised by an enchanting winter landscape on the Feldberg ❄️🌞❄️🥾.
We walked the circular route with the "red fox" route symbol. This was well developed and easy to walk on - although it was sometimes difficult to find the snowy path symbol ☺️.
A very nice tour 👍🥾

This really beautiful circular route leads from the "Sandplacken West" car park up to the Feldberg plateau. The hike crosses the Limes adventure trail, which opens up the former Roman border wall. Numerous forts and former watchtowers can be found along the main Taunus ridge. Here you pass the pile of rubble of the wooden tower of sentry post 3/52 …
