From Aarschot, you can navigate in two directions, using the Demer as a guide: upstream to Testelt, or downstream to Werchter and its estuary in the Dijle. Whichever direction you choose, the Church of Our Lady, with its distinctive spire, is a well-established landmark in the Demer Valley landscape.

Main Square

Highlight • Historical Site

The market square, with an area of 1936 m², was probably built in the 14th century. Special events used to take place on the Grote Markt. Here the official announcements were made, here were the most important buildings such as the town hall, the cloth hall and the guildhalls. The weekly market has been held here since about 1200, which received a charter from Antoon van Croy in 1462.

The southern row of houses
On 19 August 1914, the German officer Stenger was shot dead on the balcony of the former mansion of mayor Jozef Tielemans, presumably by his own soldiers. The commander was not well liked by the German troops. However, the Germans claimed that the Aarschottenaren had fired. The result was a bloody repression in which more than 170 civilians were killed and the city center was reduced to ashes, as well as the south side of the Grote Markt. The reconstruction of the houses was done in a sort of Flemish Renaissance style. The stepped gables and brick architecture are typical of the years 1920-1925.
