Highlight • Historical Site

Impressive mining landscape and the point to pick your route into the mountains. Keppel Cove, Raise, Sticks Pass, Striding edge and Swirral Edge can all be accessed from here.

Fast and open at the top, becoming more narrow singletrack further down, and ending in a series of hugely fun switchbacks, Sticks Pass (the Ullswater side as a descent from west to east) is one of the many, many descent highlights in the Lakes.

Beware though, there are a few fords and more than a couple of corners which you'll likely come a cropper on if you hurtle in to them too fast!

Up there with Britain’s best-loved mountains, Helvellyn is home to a horseshoe ridge of legendary quality. First comes Striding Edge, a knife-edge arête with a tantalisingly-good tightrope path edging along the crest, before bagging the summit and completing your high-level loop of Red Tarn via the rocky staircase of Swirral Edge.

Dollywaggon Pike

From a mountain biking perspective, the trail down Dollywagon is either an extremely exhilarating descent or a very steep climb.

In fact, the vast majority of people who attempt Helvellyn from this direction will be carrying up at least parts of Dollywagon.

It's not a bad idea to conserve as much energy as possible for the inevitable descents to come!

September 23, 2022,Helvellyn via Sticks Pass and down the Dolly Wagon

If anyone is to do this I would recommend what I intend to do next which is to do the loop in reverse.
Slightly longer on the Hike a Bike but it will make the decent more worth while.
Going the way I went requires a great level of bike control and skill whilst navigating your way down the Dolly …
