Bovy Estate – De Wijers

Highlight • Historical Site

Domain Bovy is a pearl, grand in its simplicity. In the expansive 34-hectare hiking park, you can fully enjoy nature and indulge your taste buds in an atmospheric bistro or on a sun-drenched terrace. Located within De Wijers, this is an area with a rich cultural history. The history of Domain Bovy goes back to 1134. The Count of Loon then founded the Norbertine abbey in Averbode. Twenty years later, he donated an estate of 27 hectares in Bolderberg to the abbey. The white people built a beautiful square farm there.

Information board Galgenberg area

Highlight • Rest Area

The Galgenberg nature reserve is located north of (and partly on) the former mining site of Heusden-Zolder. The Galgenberg owes its name to the former custom of hanging criminals on high places – clearly visible! Fortunately, this is no longer the case and you can enjoy the wooded heathland.

Galgenberg Forest

Highlight • Forest

gallows mountain
In the northeastern corner of the municipality of Heusden-Zolder you can relax in the green oasis Galgenberg. This is a hill of almost 60 meters high that is located north of Bolderberg and immediately southeast of the Zolder Circuit. The Galgenberg takes its name from the location of the gallows that were used to hang criminals.

The forests are freely accessible, but also serve as a rest area for the animals. This is also necessary given the often noisy proximity to the race circuit. Do you like walking? Then you will definitely get your money's worth here, because the forest is accessible by signposted walks

Hermitage of Bolderberg

Highlight • Religious Site

Lambert Hoelen, a pious man from Zolder, went on a pilgrimage to Rome and Loreto (Italy) in 1670 and 1672. According to tradition, this is where the house of Mary stands, which the di Angeli family had brought over from the Holy Land. Lambert Hoelen was so impressed by the simplicity of this holy house that he wanted to rebuild it himself when he returned home. Ferdinand, Count zu Inhausen und Kniphausen, Baron of the Free Land of Vogelsanck and Lord of Zolder, granted Lambert Hoelen permission on 16 January 1673 to build a hermitage and chapel within his country on the highest point of the region, namely on the top of the Bolderberg in Zolder, “in accordance with the form and greeting” of the holy house of Mary in Loreto. Lambert Hoelen became the first hermit of Bolderberg. He had twelve followers until 1880.
The hermitage and the chapel became a popular place of pilgrimage. On 15 May 1679, Pope Innocent XI ratified the establishment of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Loreto on the Bolderberg by means of a papal bull.

Heathland restoration area

Highlight • Natural

Once upon a time, a large part of Limburg was covered with heathland vegetation. This landscape was created by a centuries-old agricultural culture. People lived as small farmers in valleys, near water, hayfields and fertile soil. They cleared parts of forest to make fields. Once the fertile forest soil was exhausted, people needed manure. This was made by pruning old heather bushes on the ‘poorer’ and ‘less fertile soils’. This was placed in the stables as litter and mixed with manure. This formed compost. Pruning the heather bushes then produced more heather blossom. And the honeybees profited from this. And so every farmer was a beekeeper, arable farmer and cattle breeder, but all on a small scale.
Due to the years of impoverishment of the heathland, it was relatively easy to restore the heathland here, with the desired species as a result.

Peat cutters deepened the fens of Terlaemen into large ponds - good for 50 ha of water surface, which is a third of the protected nature reserve Terlaemen.
