Hollandersgatkreek

Highlight • Lake

The Hollandersgatkreek is one of the many creeks in the northern Meetjesland.

The history of this region around the 12 ha large creek was mainly written by the seawater that at unfavourable times penetrated deep inland along gullies and peat pits and flooded villages and fields.

The creek is a true paradise for waterfowl, cyclists, anglers and hikers.

Blok Creek

Highlight • Lake

The Blokkreek is a creek in the East Flemish Meetjesland (Meetjeslands creek area), located between Sint-Laureins and Sint-Margriete.

The most eastern part of the Blokkreek is of particular importance, which is partly on land, but which also contains a swamp area called Den Draaiput, which is rich in special plant and animal species.

In the north, the Blokkreek is connected to the Hollandersgatkreek and in the south with the Vrouwkenshoekkreek, which is again called Blokkreek on Dutch territory.

Remarkable are the almost right-angle bends in the creek system, possibly the result of the fact that the creek developed along man-made structures (roads, dike remnants) when it originated.

The area is European protected as part of Natura 2000 area 'Polders'.

Vrouwkenshoekkreek

Highlight • Lake

This brook, the Vrouwkenshoekkreek, is said to be one of the most beautiful in the region. Decide for yourself. In any case, he has made a nice change. Because he didn't look good in the 1950s.

The neighboring Leopold Canal had been widened and deepened and the mound of earth that arose in the process was tipped into the Vrouwkenshoekkreek. Not a good idea. Fortunately, it was returned to its original beauty and renatured.

Hundreds of water birds, especially the Marsh Harrier, visit the wonderfully flat brook area, especially in autumn. But also at all other times of the year you will be impressed by the vastness and the dancing sunlight on the flat polders.

Celie Bridge - Schipdonk Canal

Highlight • Bridge

The Celie Bridge enables the connection between Maldegem and Celie - Sint-Laureins.
Celie is an old district on the Lieve in Adegem and Sint-Laureins, already mentioned in the 14th century.

Historical explanation:
The Schipdonk Canal or the Leie Diversion Canal was dug in the bed of the Lieve. The canal connected the Leie in Deinze with the North Sea in Zeebrugge. As a diversion canal, the canal was mainly intended to limit flooding, but the canal also played an important role as a new trade route between Deinze and Bruges. A first section, from the Leie in Deinze to the Brugse Vaart in Schipdonk in Merendree, was already dug in 1847-49. From Stoktevijver in Zomergem to Maldegem, part of the Leie Diversion Canal was dug in the bed of the Lieve in the period 1854-60. From Maldegem, the canal was dug further parallel to the Leopold Canal to Heist. When the canal was constructed, the old buildings around the Celie Bridge over the Lieve also disappeared. The current Celie Bridge over the Schipdonk Canal is an iron drawbridge, rebuilt after the destruction of the Second World War, according to a design by the Ministry of Public Works from 1947.

September 19, 2025,Meetjeslandse kreken fietsroute
On the way back from Zeeland, we took some time for a bike ride in the flat Meetjesland region. We chose a route from the Meetjesland website: meetjesland.be/meetjeslandse-kreken-fietsroute-vanuit-de-huysmanhoeve
It was a lovely, leisurely bike ride under a beautiful sun.
