Den Dotter Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

Den Dotter is a beautiful, diverse nature reserve with wet and salt meadows and forests, through which the Molenbeek ("Mühlbach") meanders. In spring, the meadows turn a cheerful yellow thanks to countless marsh marigolds - hence the name.

But the area has its charm in every season, not least thanks to the two listed watermills, the Engelsmolen and the Gotegemmolen.

In Den Yolk you will find no less than 320 different plant species and countless animals. For example the barn owls that live in the pollarded willows. On the other hand, skylarks and linnets frolic in the fields. Oriole and tree falcon, on the other hand, have fun in the woods (not together, of course) and the yellow wagtail buzzes along the meandering stream at the water mills.

Highlight • Historical Site

This bakehouse in Gotegem, a hamlet of Haaltert, is said to have been founded around 1600. The bakehouse was restored in 1999 by the historical circles of Haaltert and Erpe-Mere. The bakehouse is not protected.

The Gotegemmolen is located in the Molenbeek valley and is surrounded by grasslands and some small forest plots. South of the mill there are several elongated pools.

Gotegemberg

Highlight • Climb

Attention, it's uphill! The Gotegemberg is called "mountain" and is actually a hill - but do not underestimate it. Its height difference is about 35 meters. Cyclists hate it because there is a section that has a casual 18 percent incline - but you do that with your left hand and you hardly break a sweat ?!

Below the mountain you will find a fish pond and a historic water mill (the Gotegemmolen), which is no longer in operation.

Den Dotter in Aaigem had been on our wish list for a while. Today we can cross out Den Dotter.
