Weir on the Wien River

Highlight • Structure

A mighty fortification where, seen from Vienna, nature is beautiful again. A large retention basin with lots of nature, herons, beavers, ducks... and further on the Camino de Santiago.

The pavilion of the k. u.k. Highest court in Hietzing

The construction of the Stadtbahn was the largest infrastructure project in Vienna around 1900. Otto Wagner (1841-1918), the pioneer of modern architecture, was entrusted with the artistic design of the new means of mass transport, which still characterizes the cityscape today. The erection of a separate pavilion for Emperor Franz Joseph and the "All Highest Court" at the Hietzing station goes back to his initiative. The building, completed in 1899, was given an unmistakable, representative exterior and a sumptuous Art Nouveau interior, which was tailored entirely to the needs of the Emperor was.

Maria Hietzing Parish Church

Highlight • Religious Site

As early as 1253, there was a chapel in honor of Mary here - on an alluvial hill of the Lainzer Bach. A Gothic chapel was built between 1414 and 1419, but was subsequently destroyed several times (in 1484 and 1605 by Hungarian invasions, and from 1529 to 1683 during the Turkish siege of Vienna). The church was rebuilt in 1685, and the baroque interior was redesigned between 1688 and 1690.

The Nikolaitor is a popular entrance to the Lainz Tiergarten and is just a few minutes' walk from the Hütteldorf U4 station. From here, access opens to a vast natural paradise with ancient forests, rolling meadows, and a diverse range of wildlife. The approximately one-hour nature trail, which leads past the historic St. Nicholas Chapel and the idyllic Grünauer Pond, is particularly worthwhile. Families, walkers, and nature lovers will find an ideal combination of relaxation, education, and exercise here – in the heart of the Vienna Woods, yet close to the city.
