The museum shows exhibits from Harrer's life as a mountaineer and sportsman (skiing, golf), as well as from his stays and research trips in Asia (Tibet, Andaman Islands, Borneo), South America (Suriname, Rio Xingu) and Africa. Various multimedia presentations are shown; the image archive contains more than 100,000 photographs, maps, Harrer's own drawings and numerous domestic and foreign awards.

The Tibet collection takes up a lot of space. Harrer came to Lhasa in 1946 and became an advisor and teacher to the young Tenzin Gyatsho, the XIVth Dalai Lama, with whom he remained friends for life. Harrer later wrote the book Seven Years in Tibet about his time in Tibet. In 1992 Tenzin Gyatsho himself inaugurated the Buddhist prayer room, which is located in the museum building. A photo shows him on the ceremonial chair in the throne room, on which only he as the Dalai Lama is allowed to sit. In addition, there is a large sand mandala on display, which was not destroyed after production as is usually the case.

The museum also has an exhibition on the oppression of Tibetans since the Tibetan uprising of 1959, the violations of human rights, the destruction of Tibetan culture and monasteries, the relics of Tibetan Buddhism, Bön and the mass immigration of Han Chinese.

Hüttenberg

Highlight • Settlement

In today's municipal area, the “noric iron” (ferrum noricum), valued for its quality, has been mined since pre-Roman times. Hüttenberg, first mentioned in a document in 1266, had been a market since at least the second half of the 14th century (first referred to as such in 1367). The place under the rule of the Salzburg Archbishop was 1492 by Emperor Friedrich III. awarded a market coat of arms.

Friesach Town Fortifications

Highlight • Historical Site

A first wall ring was built around 1200. However, this first wall ring was difficult to defend because of its vastness and the city of Friesach was conquered three times in 1275, 1289 and 1292. The decision to build the new, smaller curtain wall was made in the 13th century. The Sankt Veiter and the Neumarkter Tor were demolished in the course of the road widening in 1845, the Olsator in 1873 after the construction of the train station in 1873.
The second circular wall with a trapezoidal floor plan is around 820 meters long and extends at both ends to the Berglehen on Virgilienberg and Petersberg and includes the fortifications on Virgilienberg and Petersberg.

The city fortifications consist of the actual wall, ten to eleven meters high, and a lower wall in front of it about nine meters away. This is followed by a city moat about 15 meters wide and almost ten meters deep, which is dug into the slope on Petersberg. The moat is fed from various groundwater sources and used to flow into the city sewer system, today the drain is at the southern end of the moat. The lower parts of the wall date from the late 13th century, younger sections from the first quarter of the 14th century, most of the Zwingermauer and the battlements from the 15th century. In addition to the northern Neumarkter Tor, the eastern Olsator and the southern Sankt Veiter Tor, the fortifications on the slope west of the Virgilienberg had the Heidentor and between Rotturm and Petersberg the Sacktor, which still exists today.
