Far-reaching views from Strečno Castle. Kayakers were receiving instruction on the Váh River, and a fisherman was standing in the middle of the river, fishing.

Strečno Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle from the turn of the 13th and 14th Centuries was created as a guard structure on the road to Turiec, where tolls were collected. Originally it consisted of a castle tower and a small space surrounded by a wall. Through several reconstructions it has gradually become the best fortified castle in the Horné Považie region. The most famous owners were František Vešeléni, later Hungarian palatine, and his wife Zofia Bosniaková. The castle was demolished in the 17th Century by the order of Emperor Leopold I. In the 1970s it became a national cultural monument, and after extensive reconstruction work in 1995, was again opened to the public. One of the exhibits is a figurine of Žofia Bosniaková after death, located in the castle chapel. In 2013, the medieval village of Paseka grew up below the castle, consisting of five wooden houses. The village has a functional belfry, well, playground for children and a relaxation zone.

Rakytie Saddle (709 m a.s.l.)

Highlight • Mountain Pass

A good road for gravel cycling, some sections are for MTB, but they are only a few meters long. Even a less experienced cyclist can handle it. On E-bikes, even for pensioners.

Our last tour in Slovakia took us to Strecno (370 m above sea level) and the castle of the same name, which is truly worth seeing. From there, we climbed steeply to Sedlo Rakytie (709 m above sea level). A wider forest path led us to Sedlo Javorina at 976 m above sea level, and then continued to the memorial …

Today, our last mountain hike in Slovakia took us to Strečno. We started from the Váh River (ferry stop) and first visited Strečno Castle. Absolutely worth seeing and interesting. From there, we continued over the Rakytie Sedlo, with some very steep sections, to Vel'ký Polom. At the summit is the memorial to the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps. From there, we …
