Highlight • Cycleway

Runn Runt, always follow the red signs with 200 Runn Runt. The loop around Runn Runt is well-marked. You can expect beautiful views of Runn, two cafes, about 460 meters of elevation gain, and all kinds of paved surfaces, but mostly asphalt. The beautiful Vika Kyrka is worth a visit. Have fun 😉.

Elsborg Historic District

Highlight • Historical Site

Historical settlement of copper mine workers. Text of the information board:
The district of Elsborg came about as a result of the city of Falun's development plan of 1646. The intention was to create a settlement for the many miners from the nearby pit. The houses were built on a slag heap and the rectangular quarters would be strictly regulated with allotted plots and uniform cottages, often with only a living room and kitchen or just a kitchen/dining room. The pit houses were close together, with the gables facing the street.

At the beginning of the 20th century it was not so easy to live in Elsborg. Large families lived close together. Many lived in poor living conditions, but all helped one another as best they could. The children had to fend for themselves very early on and the older children looked after the younger ones.
In the summer of 1761, some town fires devastated large parts of downtown Falun, but Elsborg was spared. So a lot has stayed the same. The streets still show the checkerboard pattern they were given in the 17th century when the district was laid out. There are still many old farm buildings in the courtyards and many of the old mine houses are still on the narrow streets.

Falun Mine

Highlight • Historical Site

Copper mining at Tiskasjöberg (Stora Kopparberget) likely began in the 9th century and has been documented since the 13th century. The mine's heyday was in the 17th century, when the Falun mine accounted for two-thirds of the world's copper production. But it wasn't just copper that was extracted; at that time, the mine was also Sweden's largest gold and second-largest silver producer.
Because mining was conducted rather haphazardly, cave-ins occurred repeatedly. In 1687, a large part of the mine collapsed. Fortunately, this happened right on Midsummer, one of Sweden's biggest festivals, so no one was killed. The Stora Stöten mine is now 95 meters deep and 350 meters wide.

Kristine Church (Kristine Kyrka), Falun

Highlight • Religious Site

Construction of the church in Falun began in 1642 under the supervision of the German-Swedish master builder Hans Ferster, actually Hans Förster. After his death in 1653, Ferster's right-hand man took over the management for the next five years, until he too died. It was the then chief master builder in Stockholm, Johan Persson, who finally completed the construction of Kristine Kyrka in 1660.

Six years before completion, in 1654, the church was renamed The New Church of Falun, as Queen Kristina had meanwhile converted to Catholicism. The church was consecrated under this name in 1655 and it was not until the late 18th century that it was given the name Kristine Kyrka back.
