Until about the mid-20th century, Rhine cadets were porters and laborers in the ports and shipyards along the Rhine. They were called by different names depending on the local Rhenish dialect. For example, Poortekerls (Emmerich),[1] NRZ, Poortekerl, Rhienkadette (Düsseldorf), or Kluten (Cologne).

Emmerich on the Rhine Promenade

Highlight • Viewpoint

The gastronomic mile with many restaurants invites you to a culinary stay. Take a seat in the beach chairs and view the many ships. Along the boulevard you will also find the Krantor & the "Poortekerl", two monuments that still remind us of the Hanseatic period.

Historic Houses on Steinstraße, Emmerich

Highlight • Historical Site

No. 17
City center
The city center was still largely made up of gabled brick buildings until it was almost completely destroyed on October 7, 1944.[58] Only a few examples of these remained in the western part of Steinstraße. The group of buildings at Steinstraße 15–19 is particularly beautiful, with the houses De Wette Telder (No. 15, around 1650, the oldest parts of the core from the 15th century)[59][60] and Zum goldenen Pfau (No. 17, probably the second half of the 17th century), which are among the oldest in the city. House No. 19 with its bell gable is said to have been built around 1700. The shop window front was installed in the 19th century.[61] One of the most important secular buildings was once the Hof von Holland, Alter Markt 3, a four-story brick house with a stepped gable, which bore the year 1650 on the wall anchors. By 1957, a new building had been constructed in its place, which was formally based on its predecessor (stepped gable). Older components - the ground floor with the portal had been preserved - were not reused.

Christ Church, Emmerich

Highlight • Religious Site

The unadorned cross-shaped brick building was erected from 1690 to 1715 under the guidance of the Amsterdam architect Arnold van der Leen, on the central spirit market. To finance contributed next to the only about 500 souls strong community collection trips to the Netherlands and a licensed by the Prussian King lottery. On Palm Sunday, 14th April 1715, the church was given its purpose. [1] The church on square plan under steep hipped roofs is crowned by an octagonal lantern. In the corners of the cross arms are low attachments. This is a sermon church with a Dutch character; The immediate model was the older Oosterkerk in Amsterdam, according to their plans, it was built.

In a fire on July 19, 1907, the church burned down to the ground. Until 1909 was rebuilt. After destruction in World War II on October 7, 1944, the outer building was restored to 1958 in its original form. Only since that time the church is called Christuskirche. [1] The interior was changed by the division into two storeys. The worship room is located on the first floor and the community hall is located on the ground floor.

What an impressive bridge, which reveals itself from afar and you literally can't escape it. So I parked in the town of Emmerich so I could have a look at it. Because of the flooding on the Rhine, I couldn't walk the whole way along the promenade after visiting the bridge, but that wasn't a big deal. There are several …
