Tank battle at Lambertus Church

A decisive tank battle took place around Lambertuskerk in 1944. In the early morning of 31 October, there was a lot of activity in and around Kerklaan. In the sexton's house next to Lambertuskerk, German officers studied staff maps to position their artillery and troops as efficiently as possible. At Achterstedijk, two tracked vehicles were dug in so that only the barrel of the gun protruded just above the crest of the dike. Other artillery was placed right in front of the tower of Lambertuskerk and at the farm on the other side. The Germans also positioned themselves at other strategic locations in Raamsdonk, such as Nieuweweg and Raadhuisstraat. The Allied attack was not long in coming and focused on the passage to the bridges over the Donge and Bergse Maas. In the afternoon of 31 October, artillery fire took place on the area around Lambertuskerk.
