There may have been a Romanesque chapel around 1300, the Marienkapelle. Around 1400 a single-nave brick chapel was built in the late Gothic style. Then a tower was started, but it was not completed until 1888. The architect was Jan Jorna.
Since the church had become too small, a large three-nave cruciform basilica was added to the old nave in 1935-1936. The old choir became the side chapel and the nave the entrance portal. The newly built church, designed by J. Coumans, is in the neo-Gothic style.
In 1944 the tower was blown up by the occupying forces. The church was restored in 1952-1953 and the tower was not rebuilt, but the lower part came under the roof of the old nave. Instead, an octagonal turret was placed on the choir. ..."
