Ariostesca Fortress

Highlight • Castle

The Rocca Ariostesca is the symbolic monument of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Dominating the central Piazza Umberto, it takes its name from the poet Ludovico Ariosto who was replaced as governor of the province of Garfagnana in Este from 1522 to 1525.
There was already a small garrison on the site in the 10th century, but the structure of the fortress can be said to date back to the 12th century; modified during the thirteenth century, it was familiarly enlarged at the beginning of the fourteenth century by Castruccio Castracani, who extended an extension of the entire walls of the village; it was Paolo Guinigi who commissioned the construction of the imposing tower in the center of the Rocca, decorated with the civic clock, the terrace overlooking the square was built in 1675, the same with the opening of the monumental entrance arch to the city center.

Vergemoli Village and Valley

Highlight • Settlement

The territory of Vergemoli is marked by the presence of rivers, in particular the Turrite, which has provided energy for all human activities since the early twentieth century. Here nature works in harmony with man, leaving room for professions now in danger of extinction.

Grotta del Vento

Highlight • Cave

The Grotta del Vento is located in the center of the Natural Park of the Apuan Alps, under Mount Pania Secca in the municipality of Fabbriche di Vergemoli, in the province of Lucca (Tuscany).

It is one of the most complete tourist caves in Europe. It has three tourist routes lasting 1, 2, or 3 hours and two adventure routes. The first itinerary (lasting one hour) runs through galleries characterized by the great abundance of concretions all "alive" and of different colors. The second itinerary (lasting 2 hours) includes the previous route and continues descending 75 meters until it reaches the deepest part of the cave which is crossed by a small underground stream. The third itinerary (lasting 3 hours) includes the first two routes and involves the ascent of a perfectly vertical shaft about 90 meters high. As an alternative to the normal tourist itineraries, two adventure trails have been set up for lovers of strong sensations.

Eremo di Calomini

Highlight • Religious Site

The place of worship stands at the foot of a large sheer wall. According to tradition, it was built precisely on the spot where, around the year 1000, a shepherdess went to draw water; Before his eyes a statue of the Virgin Mary appeared which is still an object of devotion today.
