Chiusdino Medieval Village

Highlight • Settlement

Chiusdino is a district town about 30 km south of Siena.
Our holiday village Pentolina belongs to this district. In the Tuscan hills you start from Pentolina at a height of just over 400m with a beautiful view over the Feccia valley, which is about 200m lower. A small pass road leads over the Montebello and then past the Frosini castle. After crossing the Feccia river, the road climbs again to Chiusdino, which is 700m high.
The medieval village from the 12th to 15th century is, like many others, built on the top of a mountain. At the very top there is of course a church, in this case "San Michele Arcangelo".
Just around the corner you will find the birthplace of San Galgano. Down in the valley (about 10km further) are the outer walls of the former cathedral "San Galgano", the rest is in ruins. You can visit the remains of the church of San Galgano. In summer, opera evenings are held there because of the excellent acoustics. A few hundred meters away, on a hill, you will find the saint's burial chapel. It is a round building with an impressive dome. The view from there of the beautiful landscape is particularly beautiful.
The streets in Chiusdino are very narrow, sometimes very steep, sometimes only accessible via stairs. To the south, the houses are built on steeply sloping cliffs. Where this type of protection is lacking, there were and sometimes still are city walls.

I think Chiusdino is a charming medieval village that deserves a mention in the travel guides. But there are so many of this kind in Tuscany and even more so in the whole of Italy... --- A few dozen fall through the cracks.

That's good too: then you can enjoy them without having to share the space with thousands of admirers, like in Pisa, Arezzo or San Giminiano.

Chiusdino

Highlight • Settlement

Chiusdino is a splendid medieval village with a small ancient nucleus dating back to the 11th century. In the Municipality of Chiusdino there is the abbey of S. Galgano and the hermitage of Montesiepi with the famous sword in the rock. it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiusdino

Do not leave the abbey until you have found the face of Master Stonemason Ugolino di Maffeo, carved into the first of the capitals on the left.

Jubilee of Light

Highlight • Monument

Among the bare naves of the Abbey of San Galgano (12th-13th century), where the sky replaces the vault, Helidon Xhixha raises a seven-meter steel cross. It is the heart of the "Jubilee of Light" project, conceived for the 2025 Jubilee and curated by Carlo Pizzichini: an exhibition that transforms one of the most emblematic places of medieval Italian spirituality into a space for contemporary reflection.
The intervention by Xhixha – an Italian-Albanian artist known for his use of polished stainless steel and his ability to activate space through light – appears as an operation of visual and symbolic resonance. "Divine Light," the main work, is not just a monumental cross. It is an optical device that captures and reflects the sun, amplifying its luminous energy in an environment already charged with spirituality. In an architectural context where absence—the missing roof—has for centuries been an invitation to look upward, Xhixha inserts a symbol that reflects and transfigures the world.
The choice of site is not accidental: the legend of San Galgano, the knight who plunged his sword into the stone, renouncing war, is ideally linked to this contemporary cross, as a new icon of peace and transcendence. Steel, a shiny, industrial material, replaces the stone of the past, but the gesture remains the same: suspending violence and seeking an interior dimension.

Montesiepi Hermitage

Highlight • Religious Site

To see at least as much as the ruins of the church of San Galgano. The chapel is a little off the beaten track and freely accessible. Inside is a simple but beautiful dome and a mosaic ceiling in an adjoining room.

Nice wine bar with regional dishes such as wild boar ham or pasta with porcini mushrooms and of course delicious wines at fair prices. The products can also be bought in the shop and taken away.
