Sainte-Marie-Majeure Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Marseille Cathedral (Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Marseille or Cathédrale de La Major) is a Roman Catholic cathedral, and a national monument of France, located in Marseille. It has been a basilica minor since 1896. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Marseille.
Part of the earlier, much smaller cathedral still remains, alongside the new cathedral. It was built in the 12th century in a simple romantic style. Two bays of the nave were demolished in the 1850s, when the new cathedral was built. What remains is the choir and one bay of the nave. It is commonly referred to as the "Vieille Major".
The "Nouvelle Major" was built on an enormous scale in Byzantine-Roman style from 1852 to 1896 on the site used for the cathedrals of Marseille since the fifth century, principally by the architects Léon Vaudoyer and Henri-Jacques Espérandieu (1829-1874). It is 142 meters (469 ft) long, and the main cupola is 70 meters (231 ft) high. With a capacity of 3,000 seats, it is one of the largest cathedrals in France.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marseille_Cathedral

La Major was built in the Neo-Byzantine style between 1852 and 1893 to the designs of architect Léon Vaudoyer. Located in the Joliette district of the 2nd arrondissement, it stands on an esplanade between the Old Port and the Port of Joliette, on the site of the former 12th-century cathedral, from which the Occitan name "Major" comes. Its architecture and interior decoration, in marble and porphyry, give it a unique appearance for a religious building.
It was elevated to a minor basilica by Leo XIII on January 24, 1896.

It's impossible to miss this Marseille monument, which stands on the famous Corniche Kennedy, at the edge of the sea, facing the Frioul Islands. An emblematic site for the people of Marseille, it commemorates, as its name suggests, a tribute to the soldiers of the Army of the Orient and distant lands. While strolling along the coast, a visit to Marseille is a must, especially since the Vallon des Auffes is right next door. It is a true "gateway to the Orient" that reflects the history of Marseille. (Source: marseilletourisme.fr/fr/que-voir/patrimoine-culture/monuments/monument-morts-armee-orient/)

August 12, 2024,Zurück in Marseille 🤩 1: Notre Dame de la Garde und Baden
After I enjoyed Marseille so much in March, I wanted to go back to this vibrant city.
Yes, I admit, vibrant is just right... 😅, it's high season and hot too... 🥵So today we were lazy at times and just let ourselves be carried around the city... 😅
We spent the evening on the beach. It's a shame, I would …

It was another very nice impression. This time from Marseille. The stairs that you see once lead to the train station are very well-known. The flowers on the tree are artificial. The people of Marseille are inventive when it comes to beautifying their city, you can see that in the small streets. Driving a car, well... there are cars parked …

Marseille is madness! In his novels, Jean-Claude Izzo created a monument to this city between sea and land. The influences of the numerous immigrants and their subsequent generations are present everywhere.

First I roamed through Noailles, a quarter of the "little people". Many immigrants live here, for example from Maghreb, the Comoros and sub-Saharan Africa. The graffiti around the Cours …

Today we took a relaxed bus ride from Aix to Marseille.

With clouds, sun and warm temperatures we strolled to the impressive Cathédrale de la Major and then through the colorful Le Panier - very beautiful!

We continued on to the MuCEM and Fort St. Jean before enjoying a great meal on the street in the harbor.

It's supposed to be very windy, so we decide to do a sightseeing tour of Marseille.
The car ride is exciting, our navigation system can't keep up 🙄. We just adapt our driving style to the French: Bus lanes are used - otherwise we won't get in the right direction e.g.🙈😂. It doesn't matter, after circling we find our way …

A city tour with almost 400 meters of altitude difference, but Marseille is down in a huge valley right by the sea 🤔.
This is probably due to the fact that the Basilique Notre-Dame alone is at a height of approx. 150m, but since it is still very close to the center with the large boat harbor, you have a …

🇫🇷Very nice tour through Marseille, unfortunately sometimes with an umbrella☂️. Marseille is a really beautiful port city with great trendy districts, many restaurants and pubs.
Unfortunately, the end was a bit surprising, our chosen parking lot is locked at 6 p.m. and only unlocked again at 7 a.m. in the morning.
So today overnight stay in the 🚙 is announced. …
