Spangenberg Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle Spangenberg was built according to the legend of the wild Kaspar. Its wild name addition came from the dedication party of the castle, which ended only when all were completely drunk on the ground. Kaspar then lit the hut, where the party rose, so that all died and the existence of the castle remained secret.

Not quite as wild ended the history of the castle: Until the 1970s, she was a dilapidated ruin, formed until the club Castle Spangenberg, the ruins renovated, partly rebuilt and since then operates a castle tavern. And now it is also exciting for exhausted mountain bikers. Because with a hearty snack, coffee and cake or a quaint knight's meal, you can strengthen yourself great and maybe there's a beer in it - it does not have to end so wild, as at Kaspar.

This is one of the over 300 knight stones of the Palatinate Forest Association.
It stands directly to the right of the Hellerhütte or the Hellerplatzhaus. "Hellerplatz" is derived from "Hellertal"; this valley ends here.
The horseshoe is both the coat of arms of NW-Hambach and the border sign of the Hambach Forest - with 7 nail holes and a toe cap.

Heller Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

A wooden structure called Neustädter Hütte was built in 1900 and was replaced by a massive structure in 1910. The first major expansion took place in 1922 with the construction of the main house, in which the original hut was converted into a porch.

In 1924, the first water supply was implemented by installing a pump system. With the addition of the left wing in 1931, the second major expansion took place.

After the Second World War, the hut fell to the children's and youth association "Die Falken". After the hut was returned in 1949, extensive repair work was necessary. A power supply was only established in 1974/75.

The third expansion through the addition of the right wing took place in 1982/83.

The hut received media attention in 1961 through the criminal activities of the Kimmel gang, named after its leader Bernhard Kimmel, who shot the hut owner Karl Wertz on New Year's Eve 1960/1961. A knight's stone was erected in memory of the hut owner.
