Gros Morne ponds

Highlight • Lake

The foot of Gros Morne, Newfoundland's second highest mountain, is dotted with little ponds. From here are some lovely views of Bonne Bay to the south. If you're ascending the mountain, it's not long after this that the steep pull begins, through a boulder-strewn gully. Although not recommended for small children, the ascent does not pose technical difficulties.

Gros Morne gully

Highlight • Gorge

Gros Morne, the big lone mountain, looks impenetrable from most angles. However, the Gros Morne Mountain Trail takes advantage of a prominent gully in the massif's south western flanks. This is the most strenuous and difficult part of the ascent and is not recommended for small children. However, your reward for tackling the gully is a fascinating Arctic-alpine summit plateau and unforgettable views across the national park.

This is a spectacular 2,644-foot (806 m) high summit plateau, the highest land in the Gros Morne National Park. It can be a harsh environment, particularly in winter. However, it rewards the intrepid with fantastic views and an array of interesting wildlife, such as Arctic hares, rock ptarmigan and Arctic-alpine plants.
