The "Pioneer Republic of Wilhelm Pieck" on Lake Werbellin had something mythical about it in the GDR. A maximum of one student per school was allowed to spend their summer holidays here. It was not possible to switch off - indoctrination continued diligently. But there were bananas and sports/leisure opportunities that were not otherwise available in the gray provinces.
