Königshütte Waterfall (HWN 40)

Highlight • Waterfall

A very beautiful and mostly very calm waterfall. The rest area nearby offers you enough seats. Above the waterfall you look down on Königshütte. There is also a stamp office for the Harzer hiking nobility up here. If you come here by car, you can park in front of the railway bridge on a large gravel area. If you have more time, after a few hundred meters you will find the Rabensteine, from which you have a magnificent view of the Hochharz.

Sorge Border Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

Every time I am moved anew when I walk past remnants of the wall that divided Germany until 1989 or border towers. The open-air museum on the “Ring of Remembrance” is the most impressive for me after many kilometers on the border paths in the Harz Mountains. Even if the border tower is a bit reminiscent of a Trabant make (it looks a bit small and somehow not particularly solid), it gives me goose bumps. On the border path we pass the remains of the "wall", walk on a wide path past the observation tower and come across other remains of the border fence, an observation station and so on.

Part of the very well made border memorial.

View of Wurmberg

Highlight • Viewpoint

Behind the idyllic Bodetal rises in the distance, the highest mountain in Lower Saxony. Good to recognize at the ski jump on the summit.

Good resting place with monument of the division between East and West Germany. Located directly on the highway just before Braunlage.

This route is a nice bypass of the B27 from misery to Braunlage. Seen from misery the first piece is the old Braunlager road. The federal road is crossed straight and runs parallel to the B27 a nice easy to drive singletrack.

Sh... tour with 2 km of pushing the bike through mud and bumpy roads and then a flat tire. We had a spare tube but no pump 🤣. A young man from Wernigerode helped us out by driving me to the nearest restaurant in his car where I could borrow a pump. Thank you all!

The path through the Wormke Valley to the cafe in Mandelholz is unsuitable for touring bikes (primeval forest). My wife gave me the red card twice. From Schierke, the route over the Hexenritt with its concrete paving is also very challenging; full suspension and fat tires are recommended.

Shortly before Rübeland is a somewhat uneven descent. Otherwise everything can be done well with a touring bike.
