Hasenbein Master Driller Trail (Wietze Oil Heritage Trail)

Highlight • Trail

The Bohrmeister-Hasenbein-Weg (Drillmaster Hasenbein Trail) in Wietze is a cultural-historical cycling and hiking trail dedicated to the history of oil production – a central chapter in the region's technological and industrial history. The trail is named after Friedrich Hasenbein, who initiated the oil boom in Wietze with a successful drilling operation in 1899. This drilling operation was so significant that it quickly transformed the town into one of Germany's most important oil-producing regions.

The trail leads through the former Wietze oil field and connects historic drilling and production facilities, some of which are still in their original condition. Particularly impressive is the 54-meter-high drilling tower from 1961, located on the grounds of the German Petroleum Museum – a central point of interest along the trail. The museum offers a comprehensive exhibition on the technical and social history of oil production and impressively conveys how closely life in Wietze was linked to oil production.

Information panels along the trail explain technical developments, historical events, and personal stories from the era of oil production. The Bohrmeister-Hasenbein Trail is also part of the R8 regional loop of the Aller Cycle Route, making it ideal for cyclists who want to combine culture with nature. The route leads through the charming landscape of the southern Lüneburg Heath and offers a unique interplay of technological history and recreation in nature.

Beautiful view of the Aller, great landscape. A side path leads down to the flat shore. At least suitable for standing with your feet in the water. 💦

Winsen (Aller) Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

Today's town hall was first built in 1727 as an office building, but had to be demolished again due to insufficiently secured underground. It was then rebuilt in the Baroque style. On May 4, 1972, the former office building, which had meanwhile been used by an innkeeper family, was handed over to its new use as the town hall. Source: Wikipedia

German Oil Museum Wietze

Highlight • Historical Site

The exhibits in the buildings use text, graphics and models to show interesting facts about the formation, occurrence, search, extraction, processing and use of crude oil. Furthermore, the history of crude oil production and use, especially in the region around Wietze, is presented vividly. On an approximately two-acre outdoor area old and modern technical facilities for oil production, oil exploration and oil processing can be seen. Occasionally there are mining exchanges where mining, minerals and fossil related items can be traded, sold and purchased.
