Gemündener Maar

Highlight • Lake

The smallest of the 3 maars is nestled nicely in the crater about 100m lower than the surrounding area. A beautiful circular path leads around the Maar, a transition to the other Maaren and a path up to the observation tower. Swimming in the outdoor pool and boating are possible here.

In the wooded section between the Lieser and Gemünden Maar lakes, hikers and walkers encounter a war memorial. The complex is constructed of stone in a comparatively large semicircle, but the overall appearance leaves me somewhat perplexed: Only the middle of the seven sections created by the vertical structure of the memorial bears a plaque. On the others—three on each side, which, like a window, offer a view of the treetops behind—I would have expected similar plaques, mostly listing the names of the victims who lost their lives in the two terrible world wars in the first half of the last century.

Dronke Tower on the Mäuseberg

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the parking lot between the Weinfelder Maar and the Schalkenmehrener Maar, a path climbs uphill to the Dronketurm on äumeberg. There you have a panoramic view that extends as far as the Hunsrück when the weather is good. You can also see all three maars from here – Schalkenmehrener, Gemündener and Weinfelder Maar. Reason enough to take a short break here.

View of the Gemünden maar

Highlight • Lake

This maar is not only very beautiful and accessible via the MaareGlück-Rundweg, but there is also a forest café and a swimming pool here. You can swim in the maar and rent boats, and the sunbathing lawn is on the sunny side. However, you have to watch out for ticks. Those who want to can jump into the maar from a seven-and-a-half-meter high diving tower.

St. Donatus Chapel Gemünden

Highlight • Religious Site

The small chapel was built from rubble stone in 1713 and is around 4 m wide and 9 m long. There are only small windows on the south side. The year 1731 is carved on the lintel, the year in which the permit was granted to read masses there. The village of Gemünden was divided in the Middle Ages. Both Aremberg and Manderscheid made claims to power. Part of the village belonged to the Steinborn parish and the other part to the Weinfeld parish. Therefore it was debatable which pastor was allowed to read the mass. It was agreed that the pastors of Steinborn and Weinfeld alternately had the right to do so.

The small chapel is dedicated to St. Donatus, whose wooden figure from the 18th century stands to the right of the altar.

Gemünden is particularly proud of the Mother of God with the child sitting to the left of the altar, a "rural work in the style of the 14th century, 1m high. Broad face with pointed shapes, ruff like the beginning of the 15th century. The tight-fitting upper garment with a smooth belt , the coat good in the distribution of the folds that lie flat on the floor. " [The art monuments of the Daun district].

The chapel is lovingly maintained by the villagers.
