    Hiking

Begun as a temporary winter camp, Carnuntum grew between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. the capital of the Roman province of Upper Pannonia with around 50,000 inhabitants. In addition to the legionary camp and the surrounding camp town, a flourishing civilian town (municipium) developed outside the military zone.

From the 1st to the 4th century AD, Carnuntum was an important Roman metropolis on the border of the Roman Empire. Due to the militarily important location for border security and the proximity to large trade routes, Carnuntum developed into the capital of the province of Upper Pannonia with around 50,000 inhabitants.

Bringing history and basic scientific research to life is the aim of the Roman city of Carnuntum. The Roman city quarter with rebuilt ancient houses, the amphitheater and the Carnuntinum Museum as Carnuntum's treasure house let antiquity come back to life.

    CARNUTUM Roman archaeological site
In Petronell (about 30 km from Vienna)
Is a huge excavation site from Roman times. The whole area is very spacious. First, you will probably visit the Heidentor, the amphitheater and then come to the excavation of the civilian city. There is an accumulation of excavations, reconstructed buildings and facilities illustrate very well how the Romans lived and worked at that time.
