I personally like the Hexentor in Thale much better as a finish and start point. The start point in Osterode is hardly noticeable and is in the middle of a parking lot: a start couldn't be more unpretentious...🤷♂️
I also recommend arriving and departing from the Hexenstieg by train: both Osterode and Thale are easily accessible by train.
