The Bishop of Winchester is a role that dates back to 660 AD and is still held today. The Bishop is one of five C of E bishops to sit in the House of Lords. While he would once have lived in neighbouring Wolvesey Palace (Old Bishop's Castle), it's long been ruined and the incumbent bishop resides in the 'new palace' next door. This was built in the 17th century and again, largely ruined except for the grand West Wing.

Worth a detour to Wolvesey Castle. Currently it's free to enter and well-labelled for an interesting history of Winchester.

You can’t normally visit the bishop’s palace (which is the private home of the Bishop of Winchester) but you can peek into the gardens from next door, Wolvesey Castle (the old Bishop‘s palace that lays in ruins these days).
