It is known by various names: Upper Gate Tower, Kronach Gate Tower, Pfeifer- and Pfeuffer Tower, Wartturm. It has shaped the cityscape for centuries. It is certainly one of the oldest buildings in the city, even if the year of its construction cannot be precisely proven. Documents from the 14th century mention the Upper Gate, but not the associated tower.
The tower was closed to the public in 2010 for safety reasons.
In 2019, the tower was upgraded to meet fire safety requirements and has been open to visitors again since 2020.
