The still well-preserved Roman amphitheater of Lecce, in its current form dating from the 2nd century AD, could accommodate approximately 20,000 to 25,000 spectators, about half as many as the Colosseum in Rome. But as early as the Augustan period, there was a predecessor here measuring approximately 95 x 75 meters with an elliptical arena of about 53 x 34 meters. According to an inscription, this was renovated under Emperor Trajan and expanded to a size of 82 x 102 meters.
