The Orfento Valley (known in Italy as Canyon dell'Orfento) is geologically a classic canyon.
Although in Polish tourist literature and in Italian terms such as forra (gorge / river bend) appear interchangeably, the key argument for a canyon is the presence of a constant, year-round Orfento river. It is precisely this river, through millions of years of headward erosion, that has carved a deep and spectacular valley with steep, vertical rock walls into the Majella limestone massif.

For millions of years, the river has carved a canyon so deep that in many places it is completely invisible from above. For example, when entering the nearby town of Caramanico Terme, you drive over a road bridge, under which the Orfento river rushes far below – most drivers have no idea that right beneath them lies one of the wildest and purest river gorges in all of Europe!

The riverbed is home to the extremely rare and endangered native crayfish. While in most places in Europe this species has died out due to the so-called crayfish plague (a fungus spread by alien species), the isolated Orfento canyon has protected these native crustaceans, confirming the river's unique biological isolation.
