This is a concrete gravity dam (diga a gravità), which means that it relies on its enormous weight to withstand the pressure of the water. As a result of the damming of the Aso River, the picturesque reservoir Lago di Gerosa was created. The name comes from the nearby small settlement of Gerosa.

Akwen, surrounded by forests and mountains, has become a popular recreational base. Due to its clear water and good wind conditions, kayak trips, cycling tours, and rowing and fishing competitions are organized here. An interesting fact is that submerged ruins of old buildings from before the valley was flooded are still located underwater.

The lake created by the dam has become a key point on Italy's ecological map. Twice a year (in autumn and spring), the reservoir becomes a resting place for thousands of birds migrating from Northeastern Europe to Africa. It is a paradise for birdwatchers.
