Hiking

In the winter of 1227/28, the once so popular Landgravine Elisabeth had reached the lowest point of her life: no one wanted to give her and her three small children shelter. Neither the wealthy citizens nor the clergy opened their doors to them. Even the poor, whom Elisabeth had once helped, mocked the rejected noblewoman. When she finally had to move into an old pigsty with her children, Elisabeth is said to have bitterly stated: "I would like to thank people, but I don't know what for."
