It is historically significant as it is among the best-preserved examples of a Victorian coastal artillery battery in Gibraltar. It was built to protect the anchorages and sea accesses crucial for British naval power – at a time when Gibraltar was a central pillar of control over access to the Mediterranean.
It protected the bottleneck (Strait of Gibraltar) and served as a fixed gun emplacement as part of a larger complex of batteries, tunnels, and forts.
