Because modern agricultural machinery is usually too wide to fit down these narrow, deep trenches, many historic hollow ways were abandoned as main thoroughfares in the 18th and 19th centuries, leaving them preserved as quiet footpaths and bridleways today.
If you enjoy this hollow way be sure to visit Hells Lane at Symondsbury, west of Bridport, some day. It'll blow your mind!!!!
