Immensee was first mentioned in 1048 as Imisee, then in 1260 as lacus Ymmois. The name comes from the knight Immo von Buonas, who owned the fishing rights here on Lake Zug. During the French invasion in 1798, fighting against the French took place in Immensee, and in 1847 skirmishes occurred in the Sonderbund War.
