When Leo Wellens turned 50 in 1963, he wanted to celebrate with other men who had also turned 50 that year and organized the first Abraham Day. The organizers were so enthusiastic that the day has continued to be held ever since.
On October 7, 1967, on the fifth Abraham Day, the Abraham statue was unveiled by the mayor of Oosterhout, Mr. A.J.M. Elkhuizen. The statue, commissioned by the Abraham Committee, was created by artist Niel Steenbergen and depicts Abraham.
