The climb to Black Mountain starts across grasslands with big prairie-vistas under wide skies, then shifts into a steeper ridge ascent where the scrub gets thinner and the wind picks up. Trail markings are faint in places, and the top stretch is exposed, pay attention to find the way. Once you reach the summit ridge, the sweeping views of the foothills and valley below make it all worthwhile.
