The South Newport River is a beautiful 42.6-mile tidal river that begins in Long County and flows southeast to Sapelo Sound, near St. Catherines Island. It forms the boundary between Liberty and McIntosh counties and has deep historical significance, with nearby settlements dating back to the 1740s. Today, the river is a quiet, marsh-lined waterway, popular for fishing, birdwatching, and provides access to the Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge.
