The Buggytop Cave loop from Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lee Carter State Natural Area offers a journey through diverse terrain, starting with an uphill climb through oak-hickory woods before descending steeply to the impressive Buggytop Cave entrance. You'll find yourself navigating rocky sections and walking along a cliff edge, with the sound of rushing water guiding you to the cave's massive opening, 100 feet wide and 80 feet tall. It’s a rewarding experience for those who enjoy a mix of forest scenery and dramatic natural landmarks.
While Komoot rates this as an easy hike, be aware that the 3.5-mile (5.6 km) loop involves 758 feet (231 metres) of elevation gain and takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, with some sections described as medium difficulty due to steep, slippery descents and a challenging climb back up from the caves. Good hiking boots are a must, and it's wise to hike with a companion given the rugged conditions and warnings about slippery surfaces. Parking is available at the Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lee Carter State Natural Area trailhead.
This trail is a fantastic way to explore the unique karst landscape of the region, home to the significant Lost Cove Cave system. Beyond the impressive cave entrances like Buggytop and Peter Cave, the area is crucial for local wildlife, including rare salamanders and bats. You can also find historical artifacts from ancient cultures displayed at the University of the South in nearby Sewanee, adding a layer of cultural depth to your natural exploration.
