For centuries, the Mexia Galvão Gate provided access to the old prison, built at the rear of the ancient Town Hall (Praça da Repébalica) by Manoel Mexia Galvo in 1698. Built during the reign of King Pedro II, it fell into disrepair and was completely demolished in the late 1950s.
A parking lot was built on the square until 1988/1889. Subsequently, the entire square was finally restored to its present form.
