The island of flowers was once home to the Orthodox Monastery of St. Michael the Archangel, hence its older name, Miholjska Prevlaka. The monastery was considered a Nemanjid foundation. What is certain is that around 1219, St. Sava designated it as the seat of the Zeta bishopric. The monastery and church were destroyed by the Venetians in the 15th century.
